Parenting Educational Classes

Parents of children who are enrolled in Kids In Motion (KIM) are required to attend scheduled monthly Parenting Educational classes. Topics include effective communication skills between parents and children, nonviolent forms of discipline for children, recognition of family values, techniques for becoming more involved in the education of their children, health tips, presentations of free community programs and services, literacy, and stress/anger management. There is a 98% attendance rate for these classes.

Nurturing Families

In January 2006, the Apopka Family Learning Center began the Nurturing Families class. This class differs from monthly parenting education classes in that it involves a small group of the parents and children. Nurturing Families focuses on providing an intimate setting in which families are encouraged to share and receive feedback from their peers and facilitators as to how to successfully address specific problems and concerns. These discussions enable the facilitators to identify the information and skills that the group needs. Some of the more sensitive topics covered by Nurturing Families include drug and alcohol abuse, anger management, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse.

Family Literacy Classes

Family Literacy classes are open to students and parents. Weekly classes emphasize phonics; teach parents to help children build foundational literacy skills, promote growth in vocabulary, and motivate children to read. The program provides opportunities to discuss KIM curriculum, assessments, school report cards, standard grade level skills, and ultimately helps families to make informed decisions about their children's education.

Financial Literacy

Financial Literacy classes help families make better financial decisions. Parents learn how to apply basic money management skills, open a checking and savings account, and avoid financial pitfalls and credit card debt. Families are also encouraged to establish family financial goals, create a savings plan, and save for family emergencies. Children learn the life skill of money management using “play money”, and age-appropriate lessons on saving and spending goals.
